A prime pelagic site on a good current day. Gorgonian sea fans sway along the drop-off edges as barracuda school overhead. Grey reef and white tip sharks patrol the wall while turtles glide through the current below. Recommended for seasoned divers.

Shallower afternoon dive into Fiji's famous soft coral gardens. Staghorn and table corals carpeted in purple, orange, and red. Bumphead parrotfish work the reef — you can hear them crunching coral from 10 metres away.

Late afternoon light through the water makes this bommie extraordinary. Mandarin fish emerge at dusk. Sea kraits coil in the coral heads. End the dive as the reef begins its evening shift change.

Log all three dives before dinner. Three dives, three completely different ecosystems — all within a few kilometres of the resort.

In position on the trail before first light. The dawn chorus begins 20 minutes before sunrise — this is when the cloud forest comes alive.

The fruiting aguacatillo trees at km 3.2 are the quetzal hotspot right now. Move slowly, speak quietly, let the forest settle around you.

Record this morning's sightings while memory is fresh. Cloud forest birds are notoriously difficult to confirm by description alone.

The lodge feeders attract up to 14 hummingbird species. The trail behind draws tanagers in extraordinary variety — up to 40 species in a morning.
